Any city could utilize this Excel-based tool to quantify and estimate the benefits of retrofitting a specific set of buildings or a complete city-wide retrofitting program. It will help city officials argue their case to make investments that retrofit their portfolios and get support from other departmental departments, private entities, and the general public. The method was tested to determine the value of retrofitting initiatives in 3 cities: Milan, Copenhagen, and New York City. The multiple benefits of Deep Retrofits: a city-specific toolkit.
To utilize the tool, you must enter the type of building you want to retrofit (offices or schools, as well as residential properties) as well as the building’s data (floor area, the number of people using it) and the characteristic that the retrofits will have (components such as capital investment, consumption of fuel after and before the action along with carbon-related factors). The tool will calculate benefits and provides information on lower carbon dioxide emissions from greenhouse gases, job creation, and the period needed to repay the investment through operational cost savings. The tool for office buildings estimates productivity increases for employees in residential buildings, while for office buildings, it calculates an improvement in energy efficiency and health improvement.
The tool also generates visualizations of available data to the broader public.
