Ask an Architect: What Computer Should I Buy?

What kind of computer could an architect advise an architect to purchase? The first step is to look back and take a look at how every part of a system of computers functions in tandem to help you design your projects and improve your experience.

In my book Digital Sketching Computer-Assisted Conceptual Design, I provide tips for fellow architects looking to improve or expand their computer technology. As vice president of management for products at Trimble and a former product director at SketchUp, I’m aware that there are many things to think about when selecting a computer.

Computers, though less expensive and more powerful than ever before, remain a significant expense for many architects. Deciding on the right computer isn’t easy. “Which computer should I buy?” is among the most asked queries on forums for users, in which architects gather to discuss technology.

Focus on how you’ll communicate with the computers, such as the keyboard, monitor, and mouse. The components you interact with ought to be pleasant to use. These are usually the components that will last the longest.

Monitors Matter
