A platform is an elevator that can be open or enclosed. It’s used to lift people or cargo to higher floors within a building. Elevators are a part of every high-rise commercial or residential structure.
Raw Materials
The steel framework is used to build the elevator car. This helps maintain the longevity and strength of the structure. The crosshead is a set of steel beams that extends the elevator shaft from side to side over the car and holds the pulley used for the hoist cable. From the crosshead, a steel structure called a sling extends down the side of the vehicle to support the platform or floor.
Normally, the sides of an elevator car for passengers are made from steel sheets and are trimmed on the interior with elegant paneling. The car’s floor is available in either tiled or carpeted versions. The interior trim and handrails are made of stainless steel to resist abrasion and display. The suspended ceiling consists of fluorescent lighting on plastic diffuser panels and is usually suspended under the top of the vehicle. Behind panels in front of the car and adjacent to the doors are the elevator controls, emergency phone, alarm buttons, and other buttons.
To remove the guide rails, steel guide rollers are attached to the top and bottom sides of the sling. The guide rails, made of steel, are attached to the walls of the elevator shaft from top to bottom. The emergency brake system has two clamping faces that are pressed together by a wedge in order to encourage the guide rail. The wedge is operated by a screw that is moved by a roller stuck to the emergency cable.

Manufacturing System
- Elevator cars are built at the manufacturer’s factory using standard metal cutting and welding systems. If the elevator cars are left exposed to the elements during construction, the interior trim will be installed once the building has been completed.
- The rest of the elevator will be assembled on the construction site. The elevator shaft is integrated into the design of the building from the beginning, and it expands as the building is built. The walls of each post are made from poured concrete. Other factors, such as the shaft straightness, different dimensions, and other factors, are also considered when constructing the floor.
- Once the shaft walls have been completed, but before the roof is installed, guide rails, switch ladders and other support equipment will be screwed in.
- A crane will lift the counterweight to the roof of the building and then lower it into the shaft using its rails.
- The crane will then lift the elevator car and place it in the shaft partially. The guide wheels secure the vehicle to guide rails, and it is then lowered into the post.
- The shaft is covered with a roof, creating a machine room above the post. In this room are the hoist motor and controller. The governor is also installed.
- The cables for the elevator and governor are then tied and attached, electrical connections are made, and the controller is programmed.
