A Brief History of the Construction Industry
When Did Construction Begin?
Understanding the past of construction is a challenge because there is no definitive definition of what construction is. For instance, could pit houses be considered construction? What about shelters made of grass? Early humans altered their surroundings to shield them from the weather in various ways. They were typically permanent structures such as lean-tos and windbreaks. Tools were made of bones from animals and stones. The building materials included sticks, branches, grass, mud, and animal skins.
The First Evidence of Construction in the World
The temporality of prehistoric structures is that most evidence has disappeared into the elements. Historians and archaeologists can only draw conclusions based on clues left by. And the earliest instance of a hint is located at the Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania. Archaeologists found the remains of a 1.8 million-year-old stone circle. It looks like the foundations of sticks or grass huts constructed by hunter-gatherers.
The Olduvai Gorge site is the first proof of construction before the modern human race, which means that building predates humans as we are today.
But, this is different according to some experts. It’s challenging to determine what the purpose of the stone structure at Olduvai Gorge was used. Many historians believe the first evidence of human-made shelters is in Terra Amata, France. It dates back to around 400,000 B.C.; these temporary dwellings probably provided refuge for the early human population to use during hunting seasons.
Experts also agree that the first evidence of massive structures originates from Mesopotamia. Apart from dwellings in Mesopotamia, the Mesopotamians constructed temples, palaces, and ziggurats, usually using modern bricklaying methods. Mesopotamia has also been the site of one of the world’s most ancient roads. In the cities of Ur and Babylon, archaeologists discovered paved roads dating back to around 4000 B.C., which were predominantly used for trading.
The ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece, Rome, and China have also made significant construction progress. These pyramids in Egypt and Greece and the palaces of the Imperial Court of China remain awe-inspiring and continue to inspire us to this day. Imhotep, who lived from 2650 to 2600 B.C., is often considered the earliest known designer and engineer. The 50,000-mile Roman road network ran from Britain up to Syria and was unique due to the Romans, obsession with constructing the most straight routes possible between the cities of their vast empire.
How Construction Has Changed Over the Years
As more and more people settled into cities, the magnitude and size of construction expanded. Humans created complex and sophisticated permanent structures in which they could live, work and socialize in addition to the infrastructure needed to provide sedentary life. The construction of these structures required architects and engineers and coordination of materials and regulations that governed construction. Eventually, the modern industry as we know it was born around the 16th century.
Engineering and architecture came to be considered separate fields that required specialized training. Andrea Palladio (born 1508 A.D.) is widely considered the pioneer of modern architecture. He was known for his experimentation and using different materials to meet his clients’ requirements; Palladio designed palaces and country estates for Italian nobles. His work significantly influenced the following architects, and his use of the classical temple facade as an entrance porch with a roof is among the most famous.

John Smeaton (born 1724 A.D.) is often called”the “father of civil engineering” and is most famous for his road, water bridges, bridges, and millworks projects. The most notable was his Eddystone Lighthouse in Cornwall, United Kingdom, the first structure constructed with interlocking stone. He also established one of the first engineering societies worldwide, the Society of Civil Engineers.
The Industrial Revolution and Construction
The growth of the construction industry was accompanied by the development of science and technology in the late 17th and 18th centuries. The advancements in science allowed engineers and architects to play with a broader range of materials and shapes. Together with the technological advancements in the industrial revolution of the nineteenth century, advances brought about a change in the construction industry.
The year 1709 was when Abraham Darby developed a new method for smelting iron that enabled the casting of cast iron, which laid the foundation for several new inventions:
- Darby’s grandson was in charge of constructing the initial iron bridge built by the U.K. in 1781. After the bridge’s 32 yards survived the devastating flood of 1795, others built themselves iron constructions.
- The U.S. expanded rapidly throughout the 19th century, and cast iron was the most popular metal for many new constructions. Builders extensively used cast iron from water systems to storefronts because of its strength, low cost, and resistance to fire.
- Cast iron was the primary metal used in railway construction until it was replaced with wrought iron in the 1820s.
The development of the production of mass quantities led to the rise of prefabrication. The first modular houses were built in 1830. Within the U.S., the Sears Roebuck company offered homes via mail order until the 1940s. Builders also utilized the prefabrication method for non-residential buildings. The Crystal Palace was constructed of cast iron and glass. The Crystal Palace in London was first built in 1851. It was removed and rebuilt in the South London suburb, where it continued to stand until its destruction in a fire.
Eiffel Tower in Paris was constructed from 12,000 prefabricated parts in 1889.
The Industrial Revolution’s most important invention was the Bessemer process, which made the production of steel cheaper and more accessible. Between 1890 and 1895, around 80% of the steel produced was made through the Bessemer process. Bessemer process. Railways made of iron were replaced by steel. By 1900, it was possible to wrap all the steel railways across the globe ten times. Although Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge, the world’s first central suspension bridge made of steel, isn’t entirely made from Bessemer steel, its creators profited from the general availability of the materials.
With the advent of steel, girders could rise to new levels. Together with the development of technology for mechanized equipment to construct buildings and Elisha Otis’s more secure design of elevators, Bessemer steel also introduced the age of skyscrapers. It was the world’s first skyscraper in Chicago; the Home Insurance Building was constructed in 1885. The initial design was ten stories tall. The building was increased to 12 floors in 1890.
