Although it may seem simple to lay concrete on large areas, wet concrete can be heavy and difficult for DIY-ers. Installing concrete floors by professionals reduces the chance of uneven floors.
WHAT IS A SELF-LEVELING CONCRETE?
The polymer-modified cement self-leveling concrete can be used to make flat, high-compressive surfaces. It doesn’t require large quantities of water and can be used on any non-flexible surface, such as concrete, ceramic tiles, plywood, or wood.
Two types of self-leveling concretes are available: acrylic and water-based concrete. Acrylic concrete is made from cement powder and liquid acrylic polymer.
WHEN TO USE SELF-LEVELING CONCRETE
Self-leveling concrete can be done quickly and easily and is very DIY-friendly. Self-leveling concrete can be used to fix uneven floors in your house. To accurately measure the unevenness of your floors, use a spirit level. Then pour the concrete and spread it.
Self-leveling concrete has many uses. This concrete is ideal for reusing cracked or settled floors. It can also flatten and smoothen rough or uneven basement floors.
It can be used as a standalone finish material that is strong enough to withstand daily wear and tear. It is suitable for use in retail shops, warehouse floors, institutions, and other industrial locations.
Add stains, pigmented dyes and saw cuts to decorate. For a more polished look, you can also use mechanical polishing.
SELF-LEVELING CONCRETE
Self-leveling concrete has benefits, but it is not always the best choice. Self-leveling concrete is not always the best option.
It would help if you did not use self-leveling concrete unless you are a certified professional. It dries quickly and can only be spread for ten to twenty minutes before it begins to harden.
For interior flooring, self-leveling concrete works best as subsurface or standalone flooring. It is unsuitable for outdoor flooring because it does not withstand harsh environments.
Non-horizontal surfaces are not good surfaces for polymer-mixed self-leveling concrete. It is, therefore, not suitable for vertical walls. It cannot be used where heavy machinery or chemicals are applied.
Avoid self-leveling concrete for floors that have structural damage. The concrete only repairs the surface. If the floor orientation is not in good condition, the problem will return. Make structural repairs before applying the leveler to prevent your floor from sinking.
Due to its rapid drying time and high cost, self-leveling concrete is unsuitable for large repairs. Self-leveling concrete is typically more expensive than a bag with ordinary cement.
Don’t use self-leveling concrete until you can clean it immediately after application. Concrete can stain clothes and surfaces.
HOW TO USE SELF-LEVELING CONCRETE
Before installing self-leveling concrete, it is important to check for structural damage. You must first fix any structural damage that may be causing the unevenness.
Next, determine the moisture content of the concrete floor. Concrete is naturally moist, but high moisture levels can cause gradual degradation. To ensure that the slab is dry, it must be tested.
You can do this by using “the relative humidity testing using in situ probes.” Then you can begin the installation process. Prepare the floor by filling in the cracks. Next, apply primer and mix the concrete.
PREPARE THE FLOOR
Clear the floor by taking out all furniture and appliances. Take away all items that can be moved to ensure a clean finish. Clean the space and get rid of dust after it is empty. To get the best results, vacuum first. Primer is now possible.
FILL ANY CRACKS
Fill the larger cracks in concrete floors with a filler or sealant. Place the filler bottle’s nozzle in the cracks, and squeeze enough filler out to fill them. To ensure that the cracks are filled to the fullest, you can press the filler into them.
To avoid waste of the leveler, ensure you have filled every crack before moving on to the next step. Let the sealer and filler dry before priming the surface.
APPLY
After the cracks have been closed, apply the primer using a soft-bristle push broom. Apply downward pressure to evenly spread the primer, ensuring it gets into concrete pores. Let the primer dry for between 3-24 hours.
