James Dawson is a GoConstruct STEM Ambassador and the Head of Learning and Development for Keltbray. James Dawson’s work overseeing and implementing the content has played a key role in raising awareness of sustainable practices and promoting a culture within Keltbray.
What is your background? How did you get involved in construction initially?
James, I have extensive experience in construction, Learning, and Development. At the same time, I am not directly involved in green building; as Head of Learning and Development, I have been responsible for the successful development and implementation of engaging Sustainable Construction content. This content was instrumental in raising awareness of sustainable practices and promoting them across Keltbray.
What are some examples of your work that have helped shape and promote sustainability within the construction industry?
James: I have developed a suite e-learning module, which we have implemented across our company via our Learning Management System. These modules cover many important topics in environmental and social sustainability, such as Air Quality, Community, Delivering Social Value on Projects, Sustainable Procurement, and Waste Management.
Our sustainability team has worked closely with me to ensure that our training programs are aligned with the most recent industry standards and best practices in sustainability. This will enable our employees to be able to contribute to green building projects.
Recent workshops on Carbon Management, as well as those for the entire business, have been conducted by our department. These workshops played a vital role in enhancing understanding of carbon reduction and its importance in sustainable construction practices.

What has been the evolution of sustainability in construction?
James, I have seen a major shift in the construction industry over the past few years. Sustainability is now a part of every stage of a building project. From a learning and development perspective, environmental and sociological impacts were traditionally overlooked in construction courses. This is no longer true, as awareness of sustainability is growing in construction topics. An early introduction to this subject is beneficial for newcomers.
