1. What country has significant gas reserves and is leading the charge for gas-to-power projects to meet increasing electricity demand?
Currently, the U.S. has the most advanced gas-to-power technology. Nearly all of the new large-scale installations are gas-fired. Gas-fired power plants are larger and more powerful, with a growing volume and size of buildings. They complement renewable power in terms of grid stability because they can generate power at any time.
2. There are many options to vaporize LNG.
Vaporizing is possible in a number of ways. Sea water is used to vaporize in large-scale send-out plants. In cases where seawater is not likely, gas-fired vaporizers can be used. Gas-fired units are water bath heaters with high efficiency. Gas is used in the process. In certain locations, air coolers are used to heat the LNG in conjunction with backup heating sources during colder seasons. Black & Veatch used waste heat to vaporize LNG in Puerto Rico, which is one of the most efficient ways of vaporization. The heat from the LNG can also be used for turbine operation. 3. Where in the world have successful LNG projects been implemented?
LNG projects are being developed all over the globe. The success of the shale gas revolution in North America has led to developers converting several import terminals into LNG export facilities. Trinidad, Australia, and Indonesia are major LNG suppliers to the international markets. The Middle East, North Africa, and Papua New Guinea also play a role. These countries are constantly developing new supplies. Black & Veatch China has more than 20 projects supplying LNG for the local fuel market and supplying gas to commercial and residential units.
4. What is B&V’s strategy to capture these markets?
Black & Veatch’s proprietary LNG production process, the PRICO(r), is accompanied by our extensive EPC capabilities. We can take any part in the process, from the supply of the technology through to the construction. Black & Veatch has developed numerous projects in small-scale LNG, large-scale LNG export, and LNG import facilities. There are currently over 15 projects at various stages of development. There are LNG fuel plants in China and export plants located in the U.S., as well as innovative Floating Gas Systems (FLNG), which can capture gas from both onshore and offshore sources, liquefy it, and then store it before sending it to international markets.
5. What are the synergies between LNG import and natural gas-based power facilities?
When LNG imports and natural gas combined cycle plants are properly integrated, the power plant’s efficiency can be improved by up to 2%, and its power output can be increased by 10%. This is achieved with minimal cost impact. Synergies, as described in our paper, can also result in a significant decrease in capital costs and improve the efficiency of LNG import facilities. The environment also benefits from improving efficiency.

7. What impact do these have on the environment?
As the integrated power mix reduces energy consumption, it is environmentally beneficial. Natural gas emits approximately 50% less carbon dioxide than coal technology. This is an important consideration for operators who are looking to reduce their environmental footprint.
8. What impact would this have on the environment?
Integrating LNG import with combined cycle power plants can have a huge impact on the environment. Less heat is emitted into the atmosphere in exhaust gases from gas turbines or vaporizers for a given LNG terminal capacity. If an open rack is used to vaporize LNG, then less seawater is required if these facilities are integrated.
9. Are there other countries that could undertake similar projects? Will this have an impact on the economy of that country?
The current trend in LNG prices is favorable. Most countries that aren’t landlocked can take advantage of this to secure long-term LNG supply contracts. They can also build LNG import facilities, combined cycle power stations, and other integrated infrastructure in close proximity to each other. This integration will allow them to reap the benefits and reduce their dependence on coal or oil, improving their economy and their environmental impact. Brazil, Indonesia, South Africa, and India are all current markets that lend themselves well to this type of project.
10. What are the benefits and drawbacks of applying LNG technologies to SA and Africa, where there is an urgent need for LNG facilities?
In most countries, the technology for vaporizing LNG is very well developed. It could be used in Africa. The vaporization process is carried out in these facilities using seawater heating or gas-fired vapourizers. The facilities are capital-intensive and are usually unable to utilize the LNG “cold.” It is lost. Integrating LNG vaporization into power plant operations not only allows for the “cold” but also provides a more reliable and cost-effective vaporization technique. Integration offers a cost-effective and efficient solution.
