WEATHERING CIVIL ENVIRONMENTAL STRUCTURES

The importance of weathering in civil engineering

The weathering process is important from the civil engineer’s perspective, as the majority of civic structures are constructed with rock concrete or masonry. The activity is described as a decay, disintegration, and decomposition process of stone under the influence of chemical and physical agents. Different agents, such as smoke, heat, and rain cause the weathering of rocks. When a thing feels worn out, you can feel weathering.

Different types of weathering & erosion

Chemical Weathering

Chemical Weathering is the erosion and climatic changes caused by chemical activities. Sulfate attacks on masonry, concrete, and other structures often cause chemical weathering. Chemical weathering involves a series of chemical reactions between the electrons in the air and top rocks. Chemical weathering occurs when there is rain or water present. This allows many pollutants to be dissolved in the atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and nitrogen.

The Biological Weathering

Biological Weathering is a term that describes climatic changes caused by organisms such as animals, plants, bacteria, and fungi. While some natural deterioration can be classified either as chemical or physical, such as the breaking of rock by the roots of a tree, biological purification can also be chemical or physical. Physical weathering can work with natural weathering by exposing it or rocking it to the forces of chemical and physical purification.

Weathering of Building Material

There are different types of weathering on rock. The stone is not physically harmed but only mechanically broken down.

The elements that weather building materials are:

  • Stone
  • Physical Forces
  • Temperature
  • Air
  • Wind
  • Water

Weathering Characteristics

  • Weathering is a chemical and physical process that occurs in relation to the evolution of animals and plants and their vital tasks, as well as the corrosion of products after they have passed.
  • The best conditions to preserve and form weathering products are a tropical or subtropical climate, along with a terrain that is not eroded.
  • The stone mattress that has been exposed to weathering reveals a geochemical zonality (from the top to the floor) with complex nutritional features for each zone.
  • The primary minerals are usually completely decomposed, and free oxides and hydroxides can be formed.
  • Minerals of different chemical compositions are formed depending on the acidity and alkalinity levels of the medium and the involvement of biogenic factors. These minerals range from those that are immune in an alkali environment (at the bottom extremities) to those that have a resistant makeup within an acidic or neutralized moderate (in top horizons).
  • A rapid change in the amount of outer lining areas of the stone causes the cracking. The mechanical degradation of the stone is caused by frost weathering in rooms where the temperature fluctuates frequently around 0 C.
  • The water becomes louder, and the stone also breaks down after water spills in the crack.

Pile Caps and Piles

A pile foundation is the most common foundation system used for bridges. A pile is a thin, load-bearing compression member that’s driven into the ground or carved out to resist loads. The pile cap is a reinforced concrete mass that is cast around the top of a pile group to ensure they work together and distribute the load evenly.

Final Remarks

Calculating construction estimates is essential. The sample cost estimation template for construction can be used to estimate budgets. Excel sheets and spreadsheets can help you keep track of costs. Costs can be calculated for labor, materials, and legal fees and then compared to the budget.
