Berkeley Homes gets approval for two residential towers in London

Berkeley Homes received approval from the Greater London Authority for the construction of two residential towers at Islington. The City Forum will include a 42-storey building and a 36-storey tower on City Road in an area that Islington Council has already identified as suitable for tall buildings.

The scheme was assessed by Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, in December 2013 after Islington Council had rejected it.
The development will include 100,000 ft2 of office space, 43,000 ft2 of retail space, and 995 houses, 30% of which will be affordable. Plans include the relocation of an office, a hotel with 190 rooms, and a crèche.

Justin Tibaldi, Berkeley’s divisional managing director, said that the work would begin immediately. “Building more homes and jobs is absolutely vital so that we can make sure growth is sustainable.”

Tibaldi stated, “We are thrilled to have received planning permission from the Mayor and aim to be on site this summer.”
After two years of consultation with the local authority and the public, the approval was granted. Berkeley Homes agreed to build affordable housing as early in the process as possible and committed to making substantial progress on this scheme within two years.

Johnson stated that London would be the first European city to have ten million residents by 2030.

Johnson stated that “building new homes and creating jobs is absolutely vital so that we can make sure this growth is sustainable.”
MVRDV designed the plans for Russian developer Donstroy in collaboration with Proektus, a Moscow-based company, and Laplab, a Dutch company.
