The Croydon Council Urban Regeneration Vehicle, a partnership of Croydon Council with John Laing in London, UK, has received approval for the redevelopment of Taberner House. The architectural firm designed the mixed-tenure residential scheme. It will replace an existing 1960s office building in Croydon’s town center with 420 new homes.
Taberner House is the former Croydon Council headquarters, and it’s being renovated as part of Croydon Council’s PS450m regeneration program for the borough.
Five new buildings will be constructed, and Queen’s Gardens, the adjacent public space, will be enhanced with additional retail space. According to the plans, pedestrian paths through the site will become more accessible and improved, connecting the development with local communities. The Queen’s Gardens are being improved with new pedestrian paths and a series of character zones.

David Patterson, Make’s lead architect and project partner, said that the design of Taberner House would support Croydon’s regeneration plans and create a new age for architecture in the town center.
Patterson stated, “We hope Taberner House will be an important asset to the Croydon Community and start the regeneration process.”
Redevelopment is expected to begin in December. The first phase of 230 private rental units will be located in a 32-storey tower. Places for People is responsible for the rest of the project, which includes around 220 flexible tenure units spread across four pavilion blocks.
CCURV Chair Jayne McGivern stated: “Taberner House is at the end of its life cycle, and its redevelopment would deliver significant value to Croydon Council and help meet the demand for housing in the commuter distance from London.”
The ground floor will be used to house public amenities and retail. Playgrounds, sports facilities, and open-air markets will be part of the public urban space, while daycare centers and schools will be connected to the ring park.
New neighborhoods will have housing, offices, local schools, and a hospital. The urban quarter is being developed in phases to accommodate 19,000 residents and 16,000 workspaces.
MVRDV designed the plans for Russian developer Donstroy in collaboration with Proektus, a Moscow-based company, and Laplab, a Dutch company.
